Speaking at the launching ceremony of this groundbreaking and life-saving innovation, on Monday, August 3, 2020, in Lagos, the Senior Project and design Engineer, Engr. Emmanuel AJAYI proudly confirmed that these portable Covid-19 hand washing/sanitizing stations were conceptualized in Nigeria, Designed in Nigeria, built in Nigeria by Nigerian engineers using 100% local materials.
Engr Ajayi further stated that it is high time that Africans started looking inward for solutions to problems rather than sitting around and waiting for others to provide solutions for us.
This is our own contribution to the excellent job that Lagos State Government and the Federal Government of Nigeria is doing towards the fight against Covid-19, Engr Ajayi further stated in lauding the combined efforts of the Presidential task force as well as the tireless efforts of the state government.
The PSC SOLAR UK Covid-19 Contactless Portable Solar Powered Handwash Stations are specially designed for use at Schools, Churches and Mosques, Event Centers, Government Buildings, Banks, Offices, Political rallies, Building Estates, Shopping Centers, commercial bus depots, train stations, etc and anywhere where large numbers of people visit.
The Solar-powered hand wash machine forces users to wash hands with VIRUCIDAL/ ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP which is Dispensed from a contactless motion sensor soap dispenser, users also rinse their hands with clean water dispensed from a contactless motion sensor tap as well as sanitize hands with ALCOHOL BASED hand sanitizer equally dispensed from a contactless motion sensor dispenser.
The Senior Design Engineer and Project Team Leader Engr Emmanuel Ajayi shared some technical details surrounding the design of the exquisite project.
Engr Emmanuel Ajayi explained that the solar-powered hand wash/sanitizer station comprises of 85W Solar panel, 12V/60A PWM Solar charge controller, 12V/7AH battery, DC water pump and other local materials procured here in Nigeria.
When asked why they decided to use metal for the fabrication of this project Engr Emmanuel said for the purpose durability.
Other participating Engineers Engr Moses Okoroafor (Electronic Engineer) and Engr Alex Ntogo (Project Engineer) also informed us that the station has a voltage regulator which adapts the entire unit to the 12V battery; this regulator helps steps down the 12V to the actual voltage design of 6V
Engr Moses Okoroafor also told us that the station has a 5 seconds timer. When this timer senses motion, the timer starts the pumps for 5 seconds, after which it shuts them off.
Engr Moses further Enlighted us of the preventive measure taken to avoid any form of damage to the station’s electronic parts. He said an optical isolator was used in the building of this world standard station.
He said the work of the isolator is to create an isolated path between the pump and the other parts of the electronics. The pump generates a return voltage when it switches on or off and this return voltage could be harmful to the other electronics, the isolator makes the pump isolated from other parts of the circuit, so that the return voltage, which is called Back EMF, doesn’t affect anything else.
