But today\u2019s batteries are typically quite small and store enough energy for only a few hours of electricity. To rely more on wind and solar power, the U.S. will need more overnight and longer-term storage as well.<\/p><div id=\"pscso-1921689844\" class=\"pscso-content_2 pscso-entity-placement\"><div class=\"pscso-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pscsolaruk.com\/rfq\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-509 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pscsolaruk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/6tp7s.png?resize=710%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While battery innovations&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/secretary-granholm-announces-new-goal-cut-costs-long-duration-energy-storage-90-percent\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">get a lot of attention<\/a>, there\u2019s a simple, proven long-term storage technique that\u2019s been used in the U.S. since the 1920s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/water\/pumped-storage-hydropower\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pumped hydro energy storage<\/a>. But what many people don\u2019t realize is that most of the best hydro storage sites aren\u2019t on rivers at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We created a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalmap.prod.saas.terria.io\/#share=s-tPEnZ4T5NRAYIiLS0E3ftvcAzb\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">world atlas<\/a>&nbsp;of potential sites for closed-looped pumped hydro \u2013 systems that don\u2019t include a river \u2013 and found 35,000 paired sites in the U.S. with good potential. These include sharing power across large regions via interstate high-voltage transmission lines, managing demand \u2013 and using energy storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/h6R7_STgWV3bOnEo4WQ0WA--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTcwNTtoPTQ3MDtjZj13ZWJw\/https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/uu\/api\/res\/1.2\/qShtKjXcYg36DA6Q9rlGWw--~B\/aD05NjA7dz0xNDQwO2FwcGlkPXl0YWNoeW9u\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/the_conversation_us_articles_815\/556e0250345b5bbe33e520e88a82b169\" alt=\"Aerial view of a pumped hydro project&#39;s two reservoirs and solar array on a dry landscape\"\/><figcaption>The Kidston pumped hydro project in Australia uses an old gold mine for reservoirs.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/genexpower.com.au\/250mw-kidston-pumped-storage-hydro-project\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Genex Power<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Batteries deployed in homes, power stations and electric vehicles are preferred for energy storage times up to a few hours. They\u2019re adept at managing the rise of solar power midday when the sun is overhead and releasing it when power demand peaks in the evenings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pumped hydro, on the other hand, allows for larger and longer storage than batteries, and that is essential in a wind- and solar-dominated electricity system. It is also cheaper for overnight and longer-term storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Off-river_pumped_hydro_energy_storage\"><\/span>Off-river pumped hydro energy storage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the U.S. had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/prod\/files\/2021\/01\/f82\/us-hydropower-market-report-full-2021.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">43 operating pumped hydro plants<\/a>&nbsp;with a total generating capacity of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydro.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/2021-Pumped-Storage-Report-NHA.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about 22 gigawatts<\/a>&nbsp;and an energy storage capacity of 553 gigawatt-hours. They make up 93% of utility-scale storage in the country. Globally,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/2516-1083\/abeb5b\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pumped hydro\u2019s share<\/a>&nbsp;of energy storage&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sandia.gov\/ess-ssl\/gesdb\/public\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is even higher<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/2516-1083\/abeb5b\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">99% of energy storage volume<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pump hydro projects\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcn.org\/issues\/54.1\/north-renewable-energy-cultural-resources-are-not-a-renewable-thing-for-us\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can be controversial<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/arizona-environment\/2021\/08\/05\/2-little-colorado-river-dam-projects-have-been-withdrawn\/5408667001\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">particularly when they involve dams on rivers<\/a>\u00a0that flood the land to create new reservoirs and can affect ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating closed-loop systems that use pairs of existing lakes or reservoirs instead of rivers would avoid the need for new dams. A project planned in Bell County, Kentucky, for example, uses an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydroreview.com\/hydro-industry-news\/rye-development-to-build-lewis-ridge-pumped-storage-project-in-kentucky-u-s\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">old coal strip mine<\/a>.
