It is good that green energy starts from such small islands, for us to be able to be independent and to free ourselves from (fossil fuels),&#8221; said Vassilis Oikonomou, a 46-year-old snack bar owner.<\/p>\n<p>Others are more reserved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is still early, an effort is made and we all applaud that,&#8221; said cafe owner Prodromos Trikilis.<\/p>\n<p>He said locals have soldiered through power surges and blackouts to get the project going, though they are less frequent as the grid is less under pressure now with the hybrid system.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2021\/a-project-partly-funde.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2021\/a-project-partly-funde.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"A project partly funded by Volkswagen aims to replace the island of Astypalea's cars with electric vehicles.\">\n<figure class=\"article-img text-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2021\/a-project-partly-funde.jpg\" alt=\"A project partly funded by Volkswagen aims to replace the island of Astypalea's cars with electric vehicles.\" \/><figcaption class=\"text-left text-darken text-truncate text-low-up mt-3\">A project partly funded by Volkswagen aims to replace the island of Astypalea&#8217;s cars with electric vehicles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;But if you look at it in the long run how things will be, it is worth it to be patient,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The wind turbine and solar panels, donated by Eunice Energy, have a capacity of 800 kilowatts and 400 kilowatts, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The project has been working perfectly for two years,&#8221; said Aliferis, pointing to the storage batteries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This demonstrates that a small island can operate just on renewable energy,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Other isles to follow<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To the west, the island of Astypalea has taken up the challenge, hoping to cover 70 percent of its energy needs with renewables within three to four years, said Kostas Fragkogiannis, a deputy foreign minister who initiated the government project.<\/p>\n<p>In early June, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the butterfly-shaped island of 1,300 to promote a similar hybrid project aimed at cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 70 percent and energy costs by 25 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The 10-million-euro project\u2014including six million provided by the Greek state\u2014is partly funded by German automobile giant Volkswagen and aims to replace Astypalea&#8217;s cars with electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2021\/locals-have-soldiered.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2021\/locals-have-soldiered.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Locals have soldiered through power surges and blackouts to get the project going, though they are less frequent as the grid is less under pressure now with the hybrid system.\">\n<figure class=\"article-img text-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800a\/2021\/locals-have-soldiered.jpg\" alt=\"Locals have soldiered through power surges and blackouts to get the project going, though they are less frequent as the grid is \" \/><figcaption class=\"text-left text-darken text-truncate text-low-up mt-3\">Locals have soldiered through power surges and blackouts to get the project going, though they are less frequent as the grid is less under pressure now with the hybrid system.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Wind turbines and\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/solar+panels\/\" rel=\"tag\">solar panels<\/a>\u00a0will also help the islanders ditch their home diesel generators, their sole source of energy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In our eyes, it is a model for the world&#8221;, Fragkogiannis said.<\/p>\n<p>The main opposition Syriza party&#8217;s local chapter criticised the move as a Volkswagen &#8220;advertising campaign&#8221; with Astypalea serving as &#8220;exotic scenery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to sources at the Greek ministry of energy and environment, there are similar electric vehicle plans at Chalki, a tiny island west of Rhodes, in collaboration with French auto giant Citroen.<\/p>\n<p>This 26-kilometre island has also been earmarked for a hybrid power station project, with European funds. The agreement will be unveiled on Friday, a government source told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen and Citroen are showing a greener side after they were recently charged in France in connection with the &#8220;dieselgate&#8221;
