Of all renewable energy generation, solar PV is expected to\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=38112\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=38112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=38112\" aria-label=\"grow the fastest\">grow the fastest<\/a>\u00a0from now to 2050. So far, grids have been able to absorb the variable nature of solar PV\u2019s output and most locations can easily incorporate more still. However, the more solar that you install in one location, the more impact it can have. During sunny spring days in California, there is so much solar generation relative to electricity demand, that wholesale electricity prices\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/953614\/california-produced-so-much-power-from-solar-energy-this-spring-that-wholesale-electricity-prices-turned-negative\/\" href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/953614\/california-produced-so-much-power-from-solar-energy-this-spring-that-wholesale-electricity-prices-turned-negative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/qz.com\/953614\/california-produced-so-much-power-from-solar-energy-this-spring-that-wholesale-electricity-prices-turned-negative\/\" aria-label=\"can go negative\">can go negative<\/a>. Then, only a few hours later, the grid must quickly ramp up other power plants because the solar starts to lower its output just as demand is increasing, giving us what has been called the\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/5\/9\/17336330\/duck-curve-solar-energy-supply-demand-problem-caiso-nrel\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/5\/9\/17336330\/duck-curve-solar-energy-supply-demand-problem-caiso-nrel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/5\/9\/17336330\/duck-curve-solar-energy-supply-demand-problem-caiso-nrel\" aria-label=\"Duck Curve\">Duck Curve<\/a>. Thus, there is\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/solar-wind-storage-developers-gearing-up-as-hybrid-projects-edge-to-m\/556480\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/solar-wind-storage-developers-gearing-up-as-hybrid-projects-edge-to-m\/556480\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/solar-wind-storage-developers-gearing-up-as-hybrid-projects-edge-to-m\/556480\/\" aria-label=\"considerable interest\">considerable interest<\/a>\u00a0in paring solar with energy storage systems to that allow the output of the solar (or any electricity really) to be saved for later.<\/p><div id=\"pscso-2502012654\" class=\"pscso-content-3 pscso-entity-placement\"><div class=\"pscso-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pscsolaruk.com\/rfq\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-509 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pscsolaruk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/6tp7s.png?resize=710%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Energy storage prices are still too high to shift bulk amounts of energy around, but there are\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joshuarhodes\/2018\/02\/18\/energy-storage-coming-but-big-price-declines-still-needed\/#2b3db8d45e1d\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joshuarhodes\/2018\/02\/18\/energy-storage-coming-but-big-price-declines-still-needed\/#2b3db8d45e1d\" target=\"_self\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joshuarhodes\/2018\/02\/18\/energy-storage-coming-but-big-price-declines-still-needed\/#2b3db8d45e1d\" aria-label=\"some hybrid solar + storage projects\" rel=\"noopener\">some hybrid solar + storage projects<\/a>\u00a0that have been able to pencil out in the peak demand market, but peaking power plants only provide about 1% of our total energy consumed. However, as prices come down, more and more solar farms are likely to be paired with energy storage systems, like the\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/trump-administration-set-to-approve-nv-energys-690-mw-solar-farm-largest\/569676\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/trump-administration-set-to-approve-nv-energys-690-mw-solar-farm-largest\/569676\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.utilitydive.com\/news\/trump-administration-set-to-approve-nv-energys-690-mw-solar-farm-largest\/569676\/\" aria-label=\"recently greenli\">recently greenli<\/a>t 690 MW solar + storage Gemini project in Nevada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Which US states lead in solar?<\/strong><\/p><div id=\"pscso-553251420\" class=\"pscso-cybertron pscso-entity-placement\"><div class=\"pscso-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\r\nzone = \"30\";\r\npl = \"2226\";\r\nurl = \"https:\/\/cybertronads.com\/platform\";\r\n\/\/--><\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/cybertronads.com\/platform\/show.js\"><\/script>\r\n<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/research-resources\/top-10-solar-states-0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/research-resources\/top-10-solar-states-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.seia.org\/research-resources\/top-10-solar-states-0\" aria-label=\"California by far leads the nation\">California by far leads the nation<\/a>\u00a0with the most solar PV capacity with over 26,000 MW installed, almost five times more than second-place North Carolina. Over the next five years, five states (California, Texas, Florida, Nevada, and North Carolina, in order) are projected to deploy\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/states-map\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/states-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.seia.org\/states-map\" aria-label=\"about half\">about half<\/a>\u00a0of all solar PV capacity in the US, with the top two states accounting for almost one-third.
