They see there\u2019s a need to shift and use more and more renewables and a lot of companies that have implemented a more renewable focus. That\u2019s a new big thing that we haven\u2019t seen in the past.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>BDO has been conducting an energy CFO report for years, and the 2020 report is the biggest one yet.<\/p><div id=\"pscso-1411540728\" class=\"pscso-content_2 pscso-entity-placement\"><div class=\"pscso-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pscsolaruk.com\/rfq\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-509 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pscsolaruk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/6tp7s.png?resize=710%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that more and more companies are moving into renewable space is not surprising,\u201d Sackschewsky said. \u201cThe cost to implement has gone class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The survey\u00a0found that 38 percent of both oil and gas and power generation CFOs say\u00a0<strong>solar power will be the most dominant form of alternative energy in the U.S. by 2023<\/strong>.<\/p><div id=\"pscso-194281509\" class=\"pscso-content-3 pscso-entity-placement\"><div class=\"pscso-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pscsolaruk.com\/rfq\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-509 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pscsolaruk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/6tp7s.png?resize=710%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"710\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The oil and gas industry are seeing the double green benefit of solar because of its renewable nature and the price of solar going down tremendously.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mk0qaxewenuu33xx1t5t.kinstacdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/38-percent-CFOs-solar-most-dominant-alternative.png\" alt=\"38 Percent U.S. CFOs Cited in the Energy Goes Green Report Say: Solar Will Be the Most Dominant Alternative by 2023\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, at the same time, natural gas prices are going down, so oil and gas companies are looking at it as knowing the future,\u201d said Sackschewsky. \u201cThey have to participate, and they know that oil and gas aren\u2019t going away tomorrow, and there are still some technical technology reasons to overcome before solar is the dominant source.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"pscso-2155271127\" class=\"pscso-cybertron pscso-entity-placement\"><div class=\"pscso-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\r\nzone = \"30\";\r\npl = \"2226\";\r\nurl = \"https:\/\/cybertronads.com\/platform\";\r\n\/\/--><\/script>\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"https:\/\/cybertronads.com\/platform\/show.js\"><\/script>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf it lowers cost, look at ways to increase the bottom line, and solar is definitely one of those answers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>While switching to solar may seem outside of the range of oil and gas companies, solar is also much easier to come across. Sackschewsky said oils were never easy to get to, so to have a renewable source that\u2019s readily available without needing to run new lines is extremely valuable.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_pull_quote td_pull_center\"><p>Renewables used to be too expensive to make good business sense, but now\u2014driven by consumer and investor demand along with lower production costs\u2014there is more opportunity in the renewables space than ever before.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs investors sour on traditional energy assets, energy companies have the chance to scoop up significant renewable market share\u2014but they have to act fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"CFOs_biggest_fears\"><\/span>CFOs\u2019 biggest fears<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Energy CFOs are worried about the market because of pending tariffs that threaten to endanger the industry. In fact, 21 percent cited they are most concerned about regulatory uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fear is totally real,\u201d Sackschewsky said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_pull_quote td_pull_center\"><p>Over the last few years, the trade policies that have been applied, not applied, and applied again, have driven a lack of certainty in the energy industry. Particularly in solar, most panels are made in China. With trade negotiations and tariffs applied there, costs will go up when at a time its critical costs are low to compete.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The real problem for companies is if they can keep ahead of the changes by maintaining a good relationship with the government and monitoring the situation closely. In the report, 71 percent of energy CFOs say their businesses are thriving today; however, they\u2019re more cautious about 2020.<\/p>\n<p>All this uncertainty spawns from continued trade policy turbulence and the November 2020 presidential election. Depending on who wins the election will determine how the industry is regulated for the next four or possibly eight years. The elected president will also likely have labor regulations that affect the market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow the industry reacts to a Presidential election depends on who wins,\u201d Sackschewsky said. \u201cTrade policies shift. Any uncertainty creates a problem if solar panel prices go up, so does the price per kWh.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unfavorable_tariffs\"><\/span>Unfavorable tariffs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The survey found 50 percent of the CFOs feel the U.S. trade policy has been\u00a0<strong>unfavorable to energy companies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Of the oil and gas CFOs, 36 percent stated they have experienced, are experiencing, or are currently at risk of bankruptcy because of industry headwinds\u00a0.<\/p>\n<div>Bankruptcy is a real fear for some energy companies,\u201d Sackschewsky said. \u201cIt is a part of what\u2019s happened over the last several years, with companies overpaying for leases and now having significant debt.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>Oil and gas companies paid a high price to obtain leases to drill on land to extract oil and gas. As prices fluctuate, the leases have put the companies in debt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old mantra was, \u2018we will keep drilling our way to prosperity,\u2019 and that isn\u2019t working,\u201d Sackschewsky said. \u201cThe price on the commodity hasn\u2019t increased but remained steady in a low price environment. Throw that in with the investment community, demanding oil and gas companies to live within their means, and the ability to drill their way to prosperity is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This climate has given oil and gas companies a low ability to generate excess profit to pay back their debt. And bankruptcy results.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-two percent of the energy CFOs told BDO that they are planning to increase budgets in their risk management and compliance departments next year to combat this uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36% of oil and gas CFOs<\/strong>\u00a0say they have experienced, are experiencing, or are currently at risk of bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>Sackschewsky said everyone is worried about uncertainty about tariffs and trade, which wasn\u2019t unexpected, but the report confirmed.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Growing_demand_for_companies_to_be_socially_conscious\"><\/span>Growing demand for companies to be socially conscious<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While it may be surprising to hear that oil and gas CFOs are heading toward renewable sources of energy, besides solar\u2019s low price, there are outside forces driving this.<\/p>\n<p>The general public is demanding that companies have a renewable plan, even for oil and gas, and luckily it\u2019s starting to become economical to make that move. The cost per KWH dropped tremendously. And It has become a viable solution for power generation.<\/p>\n<p>Customers want to know that they\u2019re not overtly contributing to climate change, and even some employees want to work for companies that have a green mission and take green actions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mk0qaxewenuu33xx1t5t.kinstacdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/oil-gas-companies-solar-share.jpg\" alt=\"Oil and Gas and Power Generation Companies Increasing Solar Share in Their Portfolio\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For oil and gas companies that want to expand, they\u2019re facing hurdles when trying to build new infrastructure. Opposition to construction, particularly around the potential environmental impacts of projects, is causing the companies to be entangled in disputes. In the report, CFOs cited 40 percent of power generation CFOs say they have entered into a climate change dispute in the last 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are still a long way from renewables being dominant,\u201d Sackschewsky said. \u201cThere are technical issues that stop solar from being dominant, but it is moving that direction.
